Narwal Freo X Ultra

A highly-rated and highly-functional Gen 4 robot vacuum and mop that takes a fresh approach to design, the Freo X Ultra is a well-built machine. The $1,400 list price is hard to swallow however, you can find it on sale frequently enough to make it more acceptable. The unit is stunning, and the base takes up small space in the corner of your home.

The design of this robot addresses some of the issues we've experienced with other robotic mop and vacuum cleaners, such as brushes that get caught in hair and the brush not being able enough to reach the flooring beneath furniture. The ability to sweep carpets and bare floors is also impressive. The automatic Vacuum cleaners/mop system has an excellent level of debris pickup, and the mop can absorb the bare floor quickly.

The mops also employ an advanced system for cleaning along the edges of walls and around furniture. The robot is able to effortlessly avoid obstacles such as food bowls, toys and backpacks. But it can become stuck or get caught up in smaller and flatter objects like shoelaces, USB cables and pens.

We used this robot to vacuum and mop a mixture of pile carpet tiles, FLOR rugs, and hardwood floors within an open, large floor plan. With FREO Mind enabled, it cleaned and mopped the 90m2 area in just 170 minutes, which is close to average for Gen 4.

A number of features set this robot apart from other models in its class. Freo X Ultra is equipped with numerous improvements in software, sensors and hardware to keep it on top of its class. It claims 3.5 hours of autonomy for environments up 260m2.

You can modify a variety of functions from the Freo app, such as the frequency at which the robot comes back to the base station, its mopping frequency and power (silent or smart) and mopping humidity. The app can also detect areas that are heavily soiled and create an efficient cleaning route, and give detergent out or raise the pads on carpet.

Other noteworthy features include a rapid charging battery, a simple-to-read display on the robot vacuum price's underside, and a convenient dock door that is easy to open. The Freo X Ultra vacuum and mop is ideal for homeowners and apartment dwellers who want to reduce their chores and keep their homes clean.

Miele Scout RX3

Miele has a reputation of quality and innovation in the world of robotic vacuuming. This new robot aims to take that to the next level with innovative features and top-of-the-line cleaning performance.

The RX3 features a dual suction system smart navigation system that incorporates 3D mapping and a camera that sends live images to your smartphone for effortless control. The RX3's powerful four-stage system offers excellent dust collection on carpets and hard floors. Swing-out side brushes, dual suction channels and a user-friendly interface clean corners. Its 8.5 cm height lets it reach under furniture with low levels. Front cameras and an infrared sensor aid in navigating obstacles, thresholds, and obstructions with ease.

The Scout RX3 impressed us in our test on how well it was able to clean baking powder from corners and baseboards. Its 2,500Pa suction was weaker than the other robots, however it was still very silent and moved swiftly. It didn't mop, however, and its removable cleaning pads were fiddly to attach and didn't deal with dirt that had dried on.

Its app lacks advanced features, such as multiple cleaning modes or automated scheduling. It does work with Alexa however, its voice controls aren't clear or responsive. It's also flaky when it comes to navigating its way back to the charging station following an outing other robots are able to follow a previous route or follow a wall until they get to their home, but the RX3 just bumbles about until it finally gives up and sends a failure message to your phone.

We also experienced issues with the smart features of the device, namely its mapping feature and digital stay-out zones. While it did a good job of keeping away from our furniture legs and shoes but it could easily be stuck by socks and cables, and was unable to handle the tassels on carpets. This is the reason we decided not to include it in our Best Buy list. With a decent price and impressive performance, the Scout RX3 is worth considering if you're looking for a smarter alternative to traditional uprights.
